It is not clear what you are trying to do.
Audacity is a very complex multi-track audio editor. It is not an audio player and it does not play audio files in the conventional sense. Have you looked in the source code?

The current manual is not available in PDF form, but it is included in HTML form in the help menu of Audacity (if you installed the recommended version).

Your first screenshot shows 2 separate projects (two recordings). Did you have two Audacity windows open at the time? If not, one must be an old project. You have not installed Audacity correctly.
Probably the best way to fix it is to remove Audacity entirely, then reinstall it follow the instructions here: http://audacityteam.org/download/mac
