There's various approaches that you could take. method 1 Ctrl+Shift+I (Import) -> Select 1 file -> Enter Repeat for next track. Thanks, I'm starting to get the picture, but I don't know what you mean by:

I doubt that there is any simple way to kill the overspill.
Could you post a short sample - just a few seconds - in WAV format, of the stereo (2 channel) recording.

Unfortunately not.
You can make it sound a bit less harsh by using a low pass filter, but to have a noticeable effect the would will become very muffled.

Would yo0u post the output from "Help > Audio device info".
By the way, most of the log information is just Audacity looking for if/where/how ffmpeg is installed.
