Re: Finding Number of Syllables per minutes (Speech Rate)

Nice one Robert. That works better than I expected. As you say, it's highly dependent on setting the dB level correctly, but after that it's giving me results with better than 90% accuracy. There was an illegal (non-printable) character at the beginning of line 30, so I've removed it and updated you...

Re: Finding Number of Syllables per minutes (Speech Rate)

You've not said what sort of research you are doing, but if it's language research you may already have the necessary tools to count the number of syllables from a transcript. Getting 9 hours of recording professionally transcribed will probably cost something like $600, but if you are at University...

Re: File Length Increases

It added about 7 seconds 7 seconds of what? Does it have 7 seconds of silence on the end, or has the entire file slowed down/stretched? 7 seconds out of how much? How long should the file be? Does the pitch sound correct? Does the audio stutter? Does the audio sound OK if you play the audio file (s...

Re: Capturing from Online Source

For YouTube you can use Firefox web browser and one of the free YouTube Downloader add-ons.
Downloading from YouTube is quicker and better quality than recording from YouTube.

Re: System Stopped Recording

Did you connect the turntable before opening Audacity? If not, you may need to "Transport menu > Rescan Audio Devices" before Audacity can "see" the USB turntable. The USB turntable must then be selected as the recording input in the Device Toolbar . If there are no USB options l...

Re: Finding Number of Syllables per minutes (Speech Rate)

The best solution that I can think of would be to use a text to speech program such as "Dragon Naturally Speaking" (commercial non-free software) to convert the recording to text, then open the text in a word processor to get a word and character count. From the word count and character co...

Re: Line In Too Loud

There have been a number of issues reported with "Beats Audio". I'm sorry I don't know the solution, but the problem appears to be with the Beats Audio software as far as I can tell. I don't have a HP computer so I'm not able to investigate further. These are links to other forum topics in...

Re: Sound / Silence Marker

I was asking my mystery shopper about some of these issues and the mystery shopper's question surprised me:
Silence Finder - "What does the "S" (in the label) mean?"

I'm guessing it means "Silence".
Is there a definitive answer?

Re: Sound / Silence Marker

Some examples of where point labels are inadequate (require manual intervention to achieve sensible gaps): Both sides of an LP are recorded, turning over the LP while the recording is still running. Both sides of a cassette tape are recorded using an "auto reverse" cassette player. The rec...

Re: Sound / Silence Marker

I'm not sure about the requirement to enter the number of tracks. Perhaps that information isn't always to hand - for example is recording from FM radio comparable technically to recording from tape? If so you may not know the number of tracks. And what if the user miscounted the number of tracks b...
