You could try taping the lead to something solid so that it is less easily pulled out. If it still gets pulled out, after reconnecting it, wait a moment for Windows to recognise it, then from the Transport menu select "Rescan Audio Devices", wait a moment, then check and if necessary re-se...

Don't rush out to spend your $60 all at once - check the local press, adverts in corner shops and ask around - it's not uncommon for old, near obsolete, but still working PCs to be given away free to a good home ;) On old or low powered hardware XP or Linux* are likely to run much better than Window...
