Did you select "Reset Preferences"? That is important or reinstalling will make no difference at all (it may not make a difference if you reset preferences, but it is worth trying).

By all means test, KeyserS has just done that, and as you suspected, no difference. I wasn't really hopeful myself. (as I understand it) Audacity queries all the devices and all the API's on launch.
