Most operations in Audacity are disabled while Audacity is playing, recording or paused.
Press the Stop button (or press the spacebar) to stop playback.

I see no problem there.
Have you turned on "Software Playthrough"? It should be off (not selected). Please check - near the bottom of the Transport menu.
