Try rebooting, then re-install Audacity and select the "Reset Preferences" option in the installer. When you then open Audacity, confirm that you want to reset preferences.

Does the turntable have a built in pre-amp or do you have a separate pre-amp between the turntable and the Xonar Essence STX?

It may be possible to improve the overall effect by using the Equalization effect (http://manual.audacityteam.org/o/man/equalization.html)

What are you trying to record from? A USB microphone?
Check in the Windows Sound Control Panel that the recording device that you want to use is available and enabled before you open Audacity.
