Are you working with very long recordings?
Does your computer have multiple CPU cores?
Do you have a lot of labels in the project?

For Windows I'd recommend Notepad++.
I Googled for a Mac equivalent and the suggestion was TextWrangler https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/id40401 ... Id=1736887
