Re: how to amplify each track individually in a batch
I read Amplify is preffered over Normalize-- so is it? Where did you read that? It depends on what you are doing. If you want to amplify multiple tracks by the same amount , then use "Amplify". If you want to amplify multiple tracks to the same level , then use "Normalize". Some...

Re: IPhone Voice Memo Help
Make sure that you have at least one backup copy of the original recording before you do anything else. The first thing that I would do would be to split it up into sections, delete any label the sections so that you can identify them. See here for information about basic editing: http://manual.aud...

Re: Working with stereo and mono track
The easiest way to work with one channel of a stereo pair is to split the pair into two separate tracks. See: http://manual.audacityteam.org/o/man/splitting_and_joining_stereo_tracks.html To work with stereo tracks in Nyquist, use the AREF command http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~rbd/doc/nyquist/part19.html#i...

Re: Piano/Organ Issues
The usual cause of distortion is that the recording level is set too high. This causes some part of the system to be overloaded and "clips" the audio. In most cases this damage in permanent and irreversible. The solution is to ensure that the recording level is low enough that the loudest ...

I've never used it myself, but see the application: "normalize-audio" http://pwet.fr/man/linux/commandes/normalize_audio

Re: Questions about sound artifact removal.
"We can't even make hazard propositions without any facts." -What does this comment mean? It means that if we don't know precisely what the artefacts are then we don't know what the correct approach will be to deal with them. It's like asking a doctor to make a sick patient well without a...

Re: Install and Use "Replaygain" in Audacity
There is a plug-in that is based on the ReplayGain algorithm (written by myself) but it is only really "experimental" and not very practical. The proper "ReplayGain" has nothing to do with Audacity. It is a way of analyzing audio files to determine how "loud" they are, ...

Re: how to amplify each track individually in a batch
Can I get Audacity to do (2) without having to manually select each track? Yes you can :) That's exactly what the "Normalize" effect does. Rather than amplifying by a specified amount, it amplifies ("normalizes) to a specified level. http://manual.audacityteam.org/o/man/normalize.html

Re: Fixing microphone distortion (AC offset)
I could send a recording of the same word on both microphones if that would help. Yes please. I find these types of "issues" very interesting. There are many reasons why waveforms can be asymmetrical. The really damaging one is DC offset, but that is simple to solve, and does not appear t...

Re: Request "mono" and "optimal output" on MP3 export screen
The whole point of my question was trying to find out what your proposed default state of the "Lame default" checkbox was, which you didn't say in as many words in any of your posts The current default is 128 kbps CBR for both mono and stereo. The proposed new option, if enabled by defaul...
