Nice trick Consign. Yes that'll work.
You're correct that changing the speed using the drop down menu "Set Rate" just "spreads out" the samples without any other change.

Why is that? What happens after 2 seconds?

By the way, those "error" messages just mean that Audacity can't find the optional Ffmpeg library, which, assuming that you have not tried to install Ffmpeg, is perfectly normal.
