Yesterday it also had MME, but this has mysteriously disappared. That shouldn't happen. MME is a standard part of Windows and should not mysteriously "disappear". Are you looking in the right place? "MME" and "Direct Sound" should be selectable in the "host" ...

I bought the device from Aldi in October of 2011. A USB cassette player? The version of Audacity on the disc I think maybe 1.2. which I can see is no longer valid. Try rebooting your computer with the device connected.
When the boot-up is complete, check in the Windows Sound Control Panel to see if Windows detects the device as both a recording and playback device, and Windows is not hiding or disabling the device.

OK, so if you generate a 30 second 440 Hz tone, does it play back smoothly as a constant tone for 30 seconds?
