If you're using Windows Vista or later, the WASAPI method should work. Did you try that?

I try going to the file drop down menu, select export, which brings up the location where I want the file to go, but it's not working. "Not working" does not tell us anything. See here for how to Export: http://manual.audacityteam.org/o/man/exporting_audio.html Once the files are exported...

Ensure that the recording device in the device toolbar is set to record directly from your microphone and not from "Sound Mapper" or "Stereo Mix".
Ensure that "Transport > Software Playthrough" is OFF (not selected).
