It seems that when the record time gets to a previously recorded track, the screen stops sweeping to the left yet the recording continues for the designated time. To record sounds that are playing on your computer you need to use "Stereo Mix" OR "WASAPI loopback".

These days I tend to leave it at around 300 Hz unless I hear tinkly artefacts, in which case I'll try pushing it up to around 500.
