Re: Trim silences
There's a "Trim / Extend" plug-in that you could try: https://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/Nyquist_Effect_Plug-ins#Trim_.2F_Extend That is a "Nyquist plug-in". Installation instructions are here: https://manual.audacityteam.org/man/installing_effect_generator_and_analyzer_plug_ins_...

How does one Make a Macro or Plugin out of this -- so that we get a specify params and Go process? I don't have a clear picture of what you want. If there was a plug-in that could do what you want, what would it look like, what params would it have, and what would it do? Do you have any pointers to...

Re: Audacity crashes when using USB mic
Try installing "Gnome Sound Recorder" and see if the mic works with that.
(To set which mic to use, start recording and open the Audio Mixer. In the "Recording" tab, select the USB device.)

Re: extremely inefficient when installed on laptop
are you sure security apps are disrupting it? No I'm not sure, but it certainly sounds like something on that laptop is interfering with Audacity. McAfee can be quite aggressive, and in the past we have heard reports of it interfering with Audacity. I'd suggest that you try: 1. Reboot the computer ...

Re: Audacity crashes when using USB mic
Try disconnecting the webcam. Reboot the computer, then launch Audacity. Select the USB mic as your recording device in the Device Toolbar. Does that work?
