Was the original recording mono?
The audio in your clip is identical in both left and right channels = "mono".

Is you macOS up to date? The fixes that I can find on Google all say to update macOS.

So there's no chance to freeze it at 44100? Personally I'd love to make Audacity always use the default unless the user explicitly changes the Project Rate. However, the "first import overrides the default project rate" has been present in Audacity for a very long time and I'm not allowed...

Some plug-ins exist for working out BPM, but the most accurate method is:

1. Select 30 seconds of the track.
2. Press the play button and start counting the beats.

The beats per minute is double the number of beats that you count in 30 seconds.

Which version of Audacity? (Look in "Help menu > About Audacity").
What is the "minus one" that you refer to?
