When did you install FFmpeg for Audacity? If you installed it for an old version of Audacity you probably need to download the updated version of FFmpeg for Audacity and install it.

I followed it and it created the new click track but not alongside the existing song. The existing wave bars were pushed along so that the new click track played alone. when it ended the existing track resumed where I had started the new one.

Sounds like you missed out step 2.

The default hot key for recording is "R", but as with other keyboard shortcuts in Audacity, it only works when the Audacity app is in the foreground. Audacity does not have "global" hot keys that work when Audacity is running in the background.
