I tried playing that in VLC and it sounds horribly distorted.
I also tried in a couple of other apps - same result: horribly distorted. I don't think that can be fixed.

I've observed that while the pulse control gui seems to respond quickly to changes (plugging the HDMI cable or pulling it out is almost instantly shown) I'm not sure if Audacity does this too. Audacity needs to gather a lot of detailed information about the sound system, including a list of devices...

There is a switch to turn on to be able to hear without recording.....but I cannot find it.... That switch is in Windows, not Audacity. I'm working from memory as I'm not on Windows, so you may need to look around a bit, but as I recall: Open the Windows Sound control panel, select the "Record...
