If you plug in a normal (mono) microphone, and record in stereo. that should be recorded on the left (upper) channel in Audacity. Is it recording on the upper or lower channel in Audacity?

Take the earbuds out of your ears (but still plugged into the computer). Can you hear the metronome? If you can, then so can the computer mic.

In the device toolbar, set "host" to MME and the "recording device" to your microphone (not "Stereo Mix" or "Sound Mapper")

Do you also get the problem when Skype is not running?
Try, logging out of your computer, then back in again - If Skype automatically starts, shut it down, then launch Audacity. Then try processing a file - what happens?
