It doesn't make me think that.

There are 6 "Tools" to choose from. The behaviour that's "obvious" to me is that when you click on one of the 6 buttons, that one is selected.

Are you seeing a signal on the recording meter when you record?

Do you mean while recording, or when you play from Audacity, or no sound playing anything from any app?

You could try doing a manual reset of Audacity.

Go to the folder (where "~/" means your home folder)
and delete the three files:

• audacity.cfg
• pluginregistry.cfg
• pluginsettings.cfg

On next launch you should see the Audacity welcome screen.

Which version of Audacity are you using?

I've just tried "Lexis Audio Editor". It's free and it seems pretty good (and easy to use).
