I expect it can. Either of them can launch applications and then send commands to that application.

What happens when you try to record from the built-in microphone?
Have you given Audacity permission to use the microphone? (in the Mac "Privacy" settings)

Audacity can record the audio from anything so long as you have a way to get the audio into your computer (such as a "sound card" or a microphone).
