The short answer is that the damage is permanent and irreparable. The immediate problem for any echo cancellation / deconvolution technique is that you don't have either "dry signal alone" or "impulse response alone", you only have a mix of signal and echo and no good way to know...

Normally you should connect the mic before launching Audacity.
If Audacity is launched first you will need to "Rescan audio devices" (in the "Transport" menu).

Find the "help" folder in the Audacity installation folder, then find the "index.html" file within the help folder.
Double click on the "index.html" file.
Does it open in Firefox?

The advantage of WAV files is that you get very good sound quality. It is also an extremely common format which virtually all media players support.
