That's a good point. The Amplify effect shows the current amplitude up to the maximum number of decimal places, but the Normalize effect doesn't.

With Audacity completely shut down (check in the Activity Monitor that it is not running), try deleting the pluginsettings.cfg and pluginregistry.cfg (if it exists) as well as audacity.cfg. Then try to start Audacity. Don't load any optional plug-ins during start-up.
