You need to duplicate the track (Select the track then "Ctrl+D"), then apply the effect to one of the tracks, then "crossfade" the two tracks.

If the clicking is at regular intervals, then the problem is probably not the mic.

There are a few variations of G.711 so you may need to experiment a bit to get the right result.
