The problem is that the sound is very strongly concentrated around about 300 to 500 Hz, which is close to the bottom end of the frequency range of many laptop speakers. The new recording sounds good to me on good speakers.
It sounds rubbish on my laptop's built-in speakers, but everything sounds rubbish on my laptop's built-in speakers because the built-in speakers are rubbish.

Open PulseAudio Volume Control and look in the "input Devices" and "Output Devices" tabs. Are any devices shown there?
