is there any way of recovering the file? If you had done editing in the project, then no it is not recoverable. The file is corrupt.

It should look something like this when opened in a text editor:
but your AUP file looks like this:
(in some text editors it may look like an empty file. My text editor is "Scite" which displays invalid characters as "NULL")

Also, have you tried opening the project by double clicking on it?

Click on the track where you want to insert the silence, then select "Silence..." from the "Generate" menu and set the duration to 0.5 seconds.

Please state which version of Ubuntu you are using and the exact three-section version number of Audacity from Help > About Audacity...
