Re: Effects and Analyze will not Enable
"Real-time preview" ("RTP") is new, and more effects in 2.1.3 will have RTP than in previous versions. The effects that are not grayed out are the RTP effects. Eventually, most effects will have RTP, but some effects never will. "Normalize" is an example of an effect th...

Re: Batch process effects in .mp3 (speech) files
Here is the text of the debug text from my most recent "problem .mp3 file' As we thought. The error "break: float loop" is due to the presence of "absolute silence" with a length of more than 10000 samples. Absolute silence hardly ever occurs in recordings other than as a r...

Re: Batch process effects in .mp3 (speech) files
Any idea of what might be happening? As Gale wrote, there may be too much silence at the start or end of the file. To find out if that is the problem, try applying Chris's compressor to just one of the problem files (manually, not in a Chain), but rather than clicking the "OK" button, cli...

Re: Can't Amplify
Perhaps there's a click at one or other end of the track. Have you tested the effect on a audio of known amplitude? To do that, generate a tone ("Generate" menu) with the "Amplitude" set at 0.5. Then apply the Amplify effect - it should give you 6.021 dB of amplification. Does th...

Re: 'Export Multiple' in a Single Progress Dialog
Oh, I'm using xubuntu (xfce). I'm on Debian Xfce. My machine has 3GB, I currently have Audacity running in one work space, and I'm typing this email in another. and RAM usage is currently 1.4 GB used, 1.6 GB free (my system also loads some KDE services at boot-up , which makes RAM use higher that i...

Re: Insert 1/2 second of silence?
I'm not sure exactly what you are trying to do, but it sounds too complex for a "Chain" operation. Not sure if this helps, but if you select 3 files to import, then they will import into Audacity one below the other. You can then use the Time Shift tool to arrange their positions and leave...

Re: 'Export Multiple' in a Single Progress Dialog
You've not said what operating system / windows manager you are using, but if your Desktop environment supports multiple desktops, then the simple solution is to have Audacity working on one desktop, then switch to another desktop to do word processing.
