The solution to that problem was disabling the Audio Units plugins, but Audacity doesn't have the option to disable those anymore. Audio Units plug-ins are specific to Mac OS X, so that option is not available on Windows or Linux. I'm running out of ideas. Have you tried disabling all effect types,...

"Advanced options" are in my view a very different proposition from hidden settings in the audacity.cfg file, just as making it a compile time switch would be a very different proposition.
