Re: 16 bit import file / un-dithered export?

I do actually have the option of doing, for example, fades & any normalising on the actual recorder itself BEFORE bringing them into Audacity. Hmm ...? I'm trying to decide whether I should do this kind of 'processing' on the source files because I'm aware that, were I to start processing the f...

Re: Generate tone

Would someone explain why the frequency analysis waveshape shows frequencies either side of 440Hz A slightly longer answer than koz's reply... Plot Spectrum analyzes the frequency content using FFT (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fast_Fourier_transform) Basically how it works is to split the sound i...

Re: mp3 files

MP3s created with Audacity work OK for me on Sierra.
Do you see 4 players on this page and do they all work? http://easyspacepro.com/test/audio-test.html

Re: How to vizualize and play extremely large MP3 files?

Topic moved to the Audio Technology section as it is not actually about Audacity.

Although I don't use it myself, I believe that mp3DirectCut displays the waveform and allows you to play it.

Re: Cutting time from multiple tracks

There are several ways: If you can see all the tracks on screen at the same time, the quickest way is to click in the top track at the place that you want the selection to start (the part that you will delete), then drag down and across to complete the selection in all tracks. (also works if you dra...

Noise Gate

I'd like Audacity to have a built-in Noise Gate effect, preferably with real-time preview and optional side chain*. It's a common and versatile effect that is useful in many use cases. * The "side chain" would normally be off, but may be enabled for either: 1) Using another track as the ga...

Re: 16 bit import file / un-dithered export?

Spot on.

Just to add; if you forget to turn dither off, it's not the end of the world - "shaped" dither noise is virtually inaudible except during silence, and silence could be trimmed or gated later if found bothersome.

Re: Improvements to various effects

if denoise could also show a heat map showing frequency vs amplitude and super-imposed on a vertical-area graph showing the subtracting noise-floor and option for a soft-threshold instead of a hard-cut of frequencies that dont-make-it make more internal details/processes visible (probably what $oft...

Re: Apply Chain

I don't know the maximum multiple files that Audacity allows you to open, I just find out that it freezes when I tried to load 60 files. The number is limited by the capability of the computer. Note that both the number of tracks and the length of tracks is important. As the number and/or length of...

Re: 16 bit import file / un-dithered export?

Great, thanks! Just a thought though, if these audio files I'm working with are pre-formatted as 16-bit (ie: set) but I import them into Audacity & leave the default setting at 32-bit floating am I not upping the resolution to 32-bit at the importing stage? If this be the case then would I not ...
