Re: Something's messing with my mic levels
Perhaps you should consider migrating to Linux. The sound system on most modern Linux systems is a low level "driver" layer called "ALSA", with a sound server called "PulseAudio" above it. Audacity allows you to select the low level ALSA device OR the higher level Pulse...

Re: Having to set recording level meter really low. Normal?
It's quite common for Windows to set the level for USB devices very high. It's probably because Windows thinks the device is a USB microphone, so it sets the number of channels to 1 (mono) and adds a load of "gain" (boost) to the signal level. Look in the Windows Sound Control Panel to che...

Re: How do you trim each end of the recording of a song
Editing in Audacity is generally a case of "selecting" the audio that you want to act on, and then applying an action to that selected audio. The easiest way to select audio is to simply click and drag on the blue waveform. Other ways are described here: http://manual.audacityteam.org/man/...

Is this a "straight off the mic" recording, or have you processed it? If it's been processed, please post a raw "straight off the mic" sample.

Re: Recording level automatically lowers
Turn off all the sound system "Enhancements" (see: http://manual.audacityteam.org/man/faq_ ... hancements)
Windows is trying to help you by evening out the volume and reducing "noise", which is great for Skype, and terrible for recording music.

Re: Help in starting and stopping record in right place
It's good to have space at each end of a recording. It allows you to trim the ends neatly without having nasty clicks and bumps at the start / end.

Re: Focusrite Saphire 14. Can't select correct input
Garageband has the ability to select which pair of channels to assign to the recording track. Audacity does not have that ability.Pobinr wrote:why is it not a problem in GarageBand

1] Analogue would lose quality as it involves going from D to A & back to D again. Yes, in theory, assuming that the Kemper isn't doing any analog processing. If the Kemper has an analog stage, then the analog outputs may come be before the S/Pdif. Either way, if there's an audible difference b...
