My choice of operating system is not up for discussion.

As a practical suggestion, you could use Wavosaur for recording. It has ASIO support. It's not open source, but it is free. If you prefer to edit in Audacity, you can save your recording from Wavosaur, then import them into Audacity for editing.

It's not optional. You would need to modify the source code and build a custom version of Audacity.
