Re: cloud-sync workflow support
Putting it out here in case it's a really bad idea I don't think it's a "bad" idea, but a huge amount of effort has gone into making Audacity work reliably with local storage, and we still see failures (such as machines going to sleep and wiping the temp data, or "system tune up"...

Re: Sound Loudness, DBFS, SPL

Re: noise reduction
yes into a rodec mixer, but i do not have a line in on my portable - only a headphone jack, maybe that's the problem. Yes that's unlikely to give good results. When connecting up equipment it is important that the signal levels match. An inexpensive way to add line level inputs to a laptop computer...

Re: Adding randomized silence (Windows 10, Audacity 2.1.3)
Yes that will give you a maximum value of "0", and the minimum (most negative) is -5 x 9 = -45 (I don't recall, did you want -45 or -50?) but you don't really need to add "0":
(* -5 (random 10))
(* -5 (random 10))

I'm not on Mac, but I'm aware that there have been some fixes for file opening on macOS in the new version of Audacity that is due to be released soon.
The release will be announced on this forum, the main website, facebook, twitter and Google+
