Did you look in the Windows Sound Control Panel to see if the device was available?

One of the more likely possibilities is that some application grabbed exclusive access to your sound card. Rebooting the computer would reset the sound system.

Yes I can confirm that effects, particularly Nyquist effects, are much slower in that nightly build.
I think the reason is due to a different version of wxWidgets in that build.
I think this issue should be fixed in the next nightly - please check when it becomes available.

Audacity doesn't support MIDI input.

The current development version of LAME is 3.100 alpha. I'm not aware of a release date.

The easiest solution would be to make the whole thing shorter by applying a nice "Studio Fade Out" for a few seconds before it gets to the abrupt end.

I don't understand what you mean by stretching the music without changing the tempo or speed.
