The most common cause for Audacity crashing is if there are problems with the sound card drivers. Windows 10 is particularly fussy about having the correct drivers. Unfortunately a problem was discovered in the beta version so it has been temporarily removed. However, a new release candidate is due to be announced very soon.

Noise gates can be useful for this type of thing in live situations, but I'd generally avoid using a gate for voice recording. Yes the noise would be present during speaking, and then cut out in the gaps, which can sound quite unnerving (but not usually a problem in live situations as there's likely...

Split stereo to mono, and then delete the silent track (click on the [X] in the top left corner of the silent track)
