When you run other audio applications, do they show up in PulseAudio volume control, and is PulseAudio connecting them to your Xonar sound card?

Look, it seems to be a bug, not a great problem, but a bug. The steps that you describe seem straightforward enough. If it's an error in the code (aka "a bug") then it should be repeatable for some if not all of us, but it's not. Then I export it like mp3. Does the metadata editor pop up?

The error message is not obvious, but basically it means that recording has stalled. As you say this happens (only?) when overdubbing, that indicates that the problem occurs (only) when the device is asked to play and record simultaneously (duplex). I think the most likely reason that this might hap...

Is it possible that Audacity skipped that parts automatically? The only feature in Audacity that's anything like that is "Sound Activated Recording". When enabled, Audacity will automatically pause when the input level drops below the activation level. The default activation level is -50 ...
