Try rebooting your computer, then when you launch Audacity, in the device toolbar, set "host" to "MME" and select the required devices for recording and playback.

I'm guessing that if you try playing the file in any other media player (for example, Windows Media Player, or Foobar2000 you will not see that picture. I strongly suspect that it is a VLC issue. That is indeed strange, because Audacity does not support embedding graphics ("Album Art") in files. The image must be coming from somewhere other than the file exported by Audacity.

Try making a new, small, test project. If that works OK, then the problem is probably with that one project, so then we can look specifically at that one project to see what's going on.
