Re: Background noise and the waveform looks like a solid ban

And I'm guessing that it also sounds badly distorted? My guess is that it was recorded far too loudly, and is damaged beyond repair. If you could post a short sample (just a few seconds) in WAV format, then we can tell you if there is any chance of recovering anything useful. See here for how to att...

Re: XLR Mic Only Showing on One Channel

Any recommendation on hardware that interfaces with a PC that would work better? No reason to not stick with the Scarlett 2i4. As Koz wrote, you can use a mixer before the interface, but there's really no need unless you are using more than 2 mics at the same time. Once you have split the stereo re...

Re: Audacity would silently exit each time after running

I've found the problem. Doesn't happen on Windows, but could account for why we have been seeing a number of Mac users unable to launch Audacity (because it's already running). Audacity "should" handle this in rather a clever way. What should happen, (if not for the bug), is that if Audaci...

Re: Audacity would silently exit each time after running

Definitely a bug here. Not sure at the moment if only on Linux (the code forks with different behaviour for Windows), but definitely a bug on Linux.

Re: Audacity would silently exit each time after running

This is interesting - I've looked at the code, and it appears that Audacity "should" give an error message, but doesn't. This was a surprise to me because I don't recall that ever working (though I don't generally try starting Audacity when it is already running). I may have more informati...

Re: XLR Mic Only Showing on One Channel

even when I use both mics, one shows up on the left channel and the other on the right when I select stereo in Audacity That's precisely what is supposed to happen. That's what a "stereo" recording is. If you want two mono recordings (one from each mic), then the procedure is: 1) Record a...

Re: XLR Mic Only Showing on One Channel

Leave the settings in the Windows Sound Control Panel for recording "2 channels (stereo)", and in the device toolbar, select "1 channel (mono)" when using only channel 1 of the device, or "2 channels (stereo)" when using both channels of the device.

Re: XLR Mic Only Showing on One Channel

Where does the 6dB gain reduction come from if you do this dance wrong? I think it's a driver issue. If you consider the signal chain: Hardware -> Drivers -> Software When the number of channels matches in Hardware and Drivers and Software, then there is a straightforward mapping of either: Hardwar...

Re: How to disable "Save changes before closing?" popup?

There is an option to not prompt if the project is empty. See: "Show Warnings/Prompts for Saving empty project".

If you deselect that option, then you can close a project without the warning by first deleting all tracks in the project.
