What is the effect that you are applying?
Is it one specific effect that does this, or does this happen with all effects?
If you "Edit menu > Undo" the effect, does playback start working again?

As mentioned in the first post, the first thing to do is to ensure that the recording level for the mic is maxed out in the Windows Sound Control Panel . Other recording software may use ASIO drivers, which use different settings from native Windows drivers, in which case it would not be surprising ...

I'm guessing that you are using a USB turntable.
Most USB turntables also have analog out which can be connected to a hi-fi amp or powered speakers.

I've logged this as a bug because I think Audacity should be smart enough to detect non-ASCII characters in the field name and give a helpful warning.
