If it's a VST plug-in, it must be a 32-bit plug-in, not 64-bit.

USB audio devices do not generally have software recording level adjustment, so when using a USB audio device, Audacity's input volume level control will not work.

Split the selected audio to a new track ("Edit menu > Clip boundaries > Split New")
Then use the Time Shift tool to nudge it to the left.

Another thing that comes to mind: Ensure that TRIM is enabled for your SSD (if supported).
I think Windows 10 also has an optimization tool for SSDs (a bit like "defrag" but for SSDs - Don't use defrag, that's for spinny disks only). It could be worth Googling that and running it.
