Re: Adding a track

He's using an old version of Audacity. In the current version, to record to a new track, hold down the Shift key and click the Record button (or "Shift + R"). If it's still not starting the recording from the start, click the rewind button (<<) before doing the "Shift + Record".

Re: Is there a master volume envelope?

That's probably going to create a click : it's not got a fade-in. Actually, it does have a fade-in (well, sort of, but not really). It fades in from silence to full volume over 0.1 seconds, BUT... Audacity's envelopes are logarithmic (which I've always thought was a terrible idea, but that's anothe...

Re: All tracks being auto selcted when applying effects?

am I missing something fundamental here? Yes, you're using a very old version of Audacity which has a peculiar feature enabled by default called "Select All if None Selected", which means that if you don't have an audio selection, then Audacity automatically selects the entire project. In...

Re: how to search the online manual (not the whole wiki)?

In most cases it is possible to find the relevant section by searching the front page of the manual with your web browser's word search (usually "Ctrl + F"). Note also that the big picture on that page has "tooltips" when you hover the mouse over it, and clicking on part of the i...

also related, I'm looking for a way to trim all tracks at once?
Select the region that you wish to retain in one track, then
"Select menu > Tracks > In all Tracks (Shift + Ctrl + K)"

Then
"Edit menu > Remove Special > Trim Audio (Ctrl + T)"

Re: Is there a master volume envelope?

To apply I want to mute the first 2 seconds of all tracks so there is a little silence before the music starts. some of the tracks have a little noise (me adjusting my chair, taking a breath, etc) that I want to mute all of that, for all tracks the only way I can see to do this is to go into each tr...

Re: can no longer record system audio?

I'm not sure if the timing of the change coincides with a driver update, but it may? Very likely. Windows 7 should support Windows "WASAPI", so you should be able to record sounds that are playing on your computer using "WASAPI loopback" as described here: https://manual.audacit...
