I'm still not totally clear about what you are trying to do, but it sounds like now that you have discovered using multiple tracks, you have the job under control (the problem is solved) and you don't need more input from us (for now). Is that right?

Try shutting down Timidity and VLC and any other audio applications, then restart Audacity and see if you can record from you laptop's mic and play back through the laptop speakers.

The current version of Audacity is 2.3.0. Audacity does not auto-upgrade, so you have to manually download the new version and install it over the top of your previous version.
