Please describe the full set-up, including what is plugged in to what using what kind on cables/connectors.

I suspect that what you may have is "phase cancellation". If you're unsure what that means, please ask and I'll illustrate the issue.

The reel player put a pleasnat 60-Hz hum on it, which Audacity removed easily enough... With the notch filter? To this point, I've had mixed success with noise reduction, limiting, normalization and equalization. Don't bother with limiting, it won't help. The dynamic range of tape is relatively low...
