I select a range in the track being edited that has noise. Are you doing that with your mouse? (click and drag on the waveform in "Spectrogram" track view ) It is when I try to apply the spectrum multi tool to that long narrow band that I get the error message. Could you post a screenshot...

If I got this right, the optimal recording level would be at 0.10? 0.10 looks good. Given that the signal level is pretty constant, you could perhaps push the setting to 0.15, but 0.10 is OK. You could try launching Audacity from a Terminal window so that you can see what it is doing. If you create a new folder in the Windows file browser, does Windows display it with a "7z" icon, or a normal "folder" icon?

How exactly are you doing that?

By default, Windows hides the file extension for most file types. This can be very confusing. If you set Windows to show the file extensions, that may help: http://kb.winzip.com/kb/entry/26/
