Are you able to make normal microphone recordings?

Curious. Are you certain that "Sound Activated Recording" is NOT enabled?

You could try adding a little distortion (Distortion effect). Despite the name, the effect does not have to make a nasty hard crunch sound. Some of the effects can create quite subtle tonal changes. Yes, worth a shot. Sometime when Windows is just looking for updates it can totally cripple performance until it has finished and rebooted.
