OK, I see what's happening. The effect does not attempt to retain a sample accurate exact length when fading out, but rather uses a control signal at the default *control-srate* to change the amplitude. By default, control signals are 1/20th of the track sample rate, thus the length will be accurate...

Record them to a new track and edit them into the places that you need them.

You've not actually "zoomed out", you have just made the track vertically "bigger". To zoom out vertically, right click on the track's vertical ruler and select "Zoom x 1/2" from the drop-down menu.

I'm not seeing the problem that you describe. Could you give step by step instructions to reproduce the issue.

Which version of Audacity? (look in "Help menu > About Audacity").
What are you recording from?
Do you see a two channel track when you record?
What settings do you use in the device toolbar?
How are you listening to playback?
