Re: Recording of a compressed Dolby Digital bitstream

Hi Steve, Sorry to bother you again, but I think the playback problem could be related to my MOTU sound card. I exported the recorded file in 16-bit WAV, then played it back using several WAV players, and audio is always 24-bit at the output. So probably the MOTU is doing something wrong... I'll tal...

Re: Recording of a compressed Dolby Digital bitstream

Hi Steve,

I got the confirmation by one of my colleagues that the audio I recorded is really 16-bit. So we need to look at the playback chain... Could this be caused by Portaudio ?

In the meantime, I'll try to playback the exported WAV file with VLC.

Re: Recording of a compressed Dolby Digital bitstream

Do you know any software that can read WAV files and display the audio samples with their values, like in an Excel spreadsheet ?

Re: Recording of a compressed Dolby Digital bitstream

Am I able to see the audio samples values directly in Audacity's GUI ? Or the only way is to export in WAV ?

Re: Recording of a compressed Dolby Digital bitstream

Both dither control are already set to "None".

By the way I also tried to disable everything in "Preferences/Effects", but still not working.

Re: Recording of a compressed Dolby Digital bitstream

Hi Steve, I was able to make the test I described previously and I think I have some good explanations here. I recorded 16-bit PCM audio in Audacity, and when played back I obtained 24-bit audio. I have some equipment to monitor that the input PCM audio is really 16-bit, and that it is 24-bit at the...

Re: Recording of a compressed Dolby Digital bitstream

Again, I want to remind you that compressed audio (or non-PCM audio) is carried through "standard" PCM audio samples. The only difference is how the sample values are coded. PCM audio is a linear coding, while compressed audio samples are defined by a specific encoding. Audacity doesn't know that co...

Re: Recording of a compressed Dolby Digital bitstream

First, I don't know if the problem is at the record or playback stage. What I know is that my MOTU sound card is 24-bit transparent (I've had several discussions with them in the past). Again, I am feeding AC-3 audio (coded on 16-bit) to the system (MOTU + Audacity). I record the signal, then I play...

Re: Recording of a compressed Dolby Digital bitstream

I went back on Audacity 1.3.11 (Beta) using MME drivers, and I did some recording tests with compressed audio mapped on 16-bit. I changed my project settings to 16-bit resolution, at 48k. My MOTU is also set to 48k. I still cannot playback the original audio "as is", it seems to be altered by the so...

Re: Recording of a compressed Dolby Digital bitstream

Is it true to say that if Portaudio eventually supports 24-bit on Windows, Audacity will automatically support 24-bit ?

I will try to push a bit on Portaudio to know if this is going to be fixed soon...
