The HDD is 20GB, with just over 14GB free. I defragmented it before the test.
If it is a case of file size vs. memory, I guess I could try applying effects a little bit each time.

Audacity 1.2.6 crashes when applying effect
Hello. I've had this problem on a Celeron laptop with 256MB DDR and an old relic desktop Celeron with 512MB non-DDR. Both XP. Audacity crashes when I try to apply an effect to a project. Usually it applies the effect for about 10 seconds. I thought it might be a memory problem, so I did a test today...
