In the menu, go to Edit > Preferences.
Select the Audio I/O tab. In the "Recording" section, you should have "Channels" set to "2 (Stereo)"
When you open a new track from the Project menu, be sure to click on "New Stereo Track", not "New Audio Track".

Re: Audacity disapears when "restored down" unless maximized
For some reason, it appears your default window size, stored in Audacity preferences, has been changed to zero. Unfortunately, in version 1.2.x, Audacity preferences are stored in the Windows Registry. You can reset them by editing the registry, but be warned: Making a mistake in editing the Windows...

Re: why do the waveforms I'm recording look like this...?
I seem to remember seeing other posts which said that M-Audio usually uses ASIO drivers, which Audacity doesn't support.lettuce_prey wrote:M-audio Audiophile 2496 soundcard.
Could this be the problem?

Re: long vertical line
You can create point labels or region labels at any place in the project. When you create a label track, it is linked to the audio tracks above it in the Audacity window. When you click on the label name, if it is a point label, it draws a vertical line on any audio tracks that are selected. If it i...

Re: Help, Please & Thank You!! (Beginner)
Should I download the intsturmental and then open it in Audacity then record my voice over it? Yes. That way you get the original instrumental, and not one that has come out through your speakers and in through a poor quality laptop microphone, picking up feedback and all the noise in the room on t...

Re: Input Channels Question/problem
You need to select the input channel in Windows Sound Control Panel, to make it appear in Audacity.
Right-click on the speaker icon at the right-hand end of the taskbar and select "Adjust audio properties".

Re: Waveform centers a little above flat black zero line
What you've got is DC Offset. It means that some battery voltage is leaking into the audio in your soundcard. You can fix it using Normalise. Tick the "Remove DC Offset" box and un-tick the "Normalise" box. Do this before you do any other editing on the show. If it worked OK on Vista but the problem...

Re: Recording in one channel
You will need to give us more than that.
What are you trying to record, and what equipment are you using to do it?
What computer?
What operating system?
What sound card?
Which version of Audacity? (This part of the forum is for problems with downloading and installing version 1.3.x)

Re: large files and converting as mp3
So I just wanted to know if saving a long audio piece recorded with audacity as an mp3 instead, and then editing it later and saving it again as mp3 would effect the quality of the originally saved mp3. Yes. Every time you export from Audacity as MP3, you put the audio through the compression proce...
