Re: Windows 7 Recording Workaround
For me windows 7 assumes the USB is for speakers. This is actually a different question, and should be posted in a separate thread, but ... When you connect a USB device, Windows will assume it is intended for both recording and playback unless you tell it otherwise. In Audacity, Edit > Preferences...

Re: No tabs in Preferences
In version 1.3, the "Devices" option in the preferences menu selects the recording and playback devices.

Re: Editing Metadata
Yes, go to File > Open Metadata Editor, fill in the data you want common to all tracks, and Save as a Template. It will appear for each track when you Export Multiple. Support for metadata is not standardised, and varies between file formats and applications. I'm not sure to what extent WMA supports...

Re: another installation problem (Stream error)
Try the zip version of the download.
The zip version of 1.3.12 is available here:
http://audacity.googlecode.com/files/au ... 1.3.12.zip
Copy the zip file to your offline PC and extract to the directory where you want Audacity to reside, (Usually C:Program FilesAudacity)

Re: Error Playing Imported Files
Audacity Version 1.3 allows you to import a much wider range of file types than 1.2 does, because it supports the ffmpeg import/export library. The current version, 1.3.12 is available here: http://audacityteam.org/download/ You will also need to install the ffmpeg library which you can get from her...
Re: Clipping
That screenshot shows clearly that the signal is being clipped before it gets into the computer, and suggests the clipping is happening before the Art preamp, if adjusting the gain on the Art reduces the level of the signal, but doesn't stop the clipping. Does the clipping indicator on the Art light...

Re: Crackling sound - buffer full ?
Audacity needs instant, fast disk access when it is recording. If the disk is fragmented, and the computer has to look for places to put the data, or if it has to go off and do a complicated spreadsheet calculation in the middle of writing to disk, then the next chunk of audio has come and gone befo...
