Re: spectrum analyzer
I want to use the spectrum analyzer under the Analyze tool in Audacity. I can find no information on how to control either the frequency limits of the display or the amplitude display. It would also be nice to find out how to contact the writer. Can anyone out there help me? Jerry: As far as I know...

Re: Problems Recording from Dat player
I assume you're using the digital input on the iMac? If you're using analog in then I'm stumped. In the Finder, go to Applications/Utilities/ and open Audio Midi Setup. In the Audio Input section set Source to Digital In and then see if it will let you set Format to 32000.0 Hz. If not, you're stuck ...

Re: Tape2USB picks up all ambient noise in area
Go to Apple Menu > System Preferences > Sound > Input tab and make sure the Tape2USB is selected as the input device.
In Audacity, go to Preferences > Devices and make sure your recording device does not say "Built-in Microphone" but instead "Tape2USB".

Re: silence after 16seconds
Which is a production decision, not an engineering one. Agreed, as long as the production department is willing to pay for the multiple terabyte drives needed! ;) Of course, with bands on tour using 24 track Pro Tools HD systems recording every song from every show using hot-swappable hard drive ba...

Re: Leveller effect adds distortion
The first (limiter) only adjusts its gain when the input signal is above the threshold; below the threshold its gain is unity. If there is make-up gain, then the gain below the threshold is no longer unity. Again, I need to be more rigourous. Should have said "below the threshold the I/O tra...

Re: Cannot record properly
How are you recording the internet stream? What computer and OS are you using? What version of Audacity?

Re: Leveller effect adds distortion
All a matter of definition. The change in dynamics is itself a form of distortion. Put a signal into a black box with zero distortion, and other than the gain level the output is identical to the input. On the other hand, the shape of individual waveforms remain largely unchanged so there is little...

Re: Leveller effect adds distortion
I don't know anybody who claimed any compressor was distortion free. Even Chris creates enormous distortions of the original given that the show becomes as much as 20dB louder with dramatic phrase-to-phrase variations. It's just how you measure it. Chris designed his work to be insanely pleasant to...

Re: silence after 16seconds
Not to worry. That can be fixed, too. Save Project As... [TuesdayAfternoonShow] [Enter] Save UNDO data... Yes[X] .. No[ ] That's fine, as long as you've got the space to store all of that forever. Take a one hour stereo show, 16-bit 44.1kHz. Amplify -3dB. Look at the History window - it takes about...
