Re: Connecting recording device
Go to Apple menu > System Preferences > Security and Privacy > Privacy.
Click on "Microphone" in the list on the left.
Is Audacity listed (with a checkmark) in the list on the right?

Re: Big Sur
Go to Apple menu > System Preferences > Sound > Output. Plug in your headphones. Does anything change in the output device list? Select your headphones if you can.
Switch to the "Sound Effects" tab. Click a different sound effect from the list. Do you hear it in your headphones?

Re: Connecting recording device
So you see "BT-USB-Tape-100" in the input list in Sound Preferences? According to the manual for this device the CD just contains a copy of Audacity (probably a very old version), so that is not the issue. In Audacity, if you select the "Internal Microphone" as the Recording Device and make a record...

Re: Connecting recording device
Go to Apple menu > System Preferences > Sound > Input. From the list, select your cassette-to-USB device. Play a cassette. Does the sound input meter bounce?
I am surprised that it is listed as "USB Microphone". Would it perhaps be "PnP USB Audio Device" or similar?

Re: Get sound in can't get it out!
Thank Bill, But I don't think I have explained the problem well. I can playback via a stand-alone speaker from the Rega output. I can't get a signal to Audacity or to the headphones outlet on the computer or speakers on the monitor. See it in SOUND Preferences/input/output and even get an Input sig...

Re: Complete newbie here
Confirm that you are getting sound out of the cassette deck by listening with headphones. Unplug the headphones from the cassette deck, but leave the cassette running. Plug the male-to-male cable from the headphone output of the cassette deck into the Line Input of the iMac. Go to System Preferences...

Re: Get sound in can't get it out!
A simple way to test whether the Rega will play back audio from the computer is to go to the "Sound Effects" section of Sound Preferences and choose the Rega in the dropdown menu for "Play sound effects through:". Choose different sound effects from the list and you should hear them played through y...

Re: Recording 6 channels from Pioneer mixer
What model is the mixer? How are you connecting it to your Mac? Which Mac? Which version of Audacity?
